Programs
Insight Programs: Daylong courses offered at Outward Bound’s campuses located in Baltimore’s Leakin Park and Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. Participants spend the day engaged in problem solving exercises and challenge themselves and each other while climbing high ropes and the 40-foot wall. As they tackle their fears they build self-confidence and develop a sense of trust and teamwork. Teams from schools come together and work to bring the impact and learning from the experience back to the school culture.
  • INSIGHT PROGRAMS run from Tuesday - Friday in the Spring and Fall Seasons and by request during the summer months.

Peer Leadership Expeditions: Five-or-seven day expeditions offered to middle or high schools across Maryland and in the city of Philadelphia during the spring or fall semesters. Peer Leadership courses are uniquely designed to engage students with their peers in challenging environments and to develop leadership and personal skills applicable to everyday life at home and at school. One or two educators from each participating school accompany the selected students on their course. Funding subsidies are available to support these educational programs. Schools pay a nominal admission fee to participate.

  • Wilderness Expeditions: These five or seven day courses feature backpacking along the Appalachian Trail in Maryland or Pennsylvania or canoeing the Delaware or Potomac Rivers. Courses are varied but always include lessons in Leave No Trace™ camping, equipment set up and safety standards, navigation using map and compass, journaling and personal reflection.

  • Philadelphia Urban Expedition: This five-day Peer Leadership course offers participants a complete Outward Bound experience within the rich cultural, historical, and natural environment of metropolitan Philadelphia. Students on these expeditions explore the city, complete community service projects, climb Outward Bound’s high ropes, overnight in our 30’ high tree house, canoe the Schuylkill River, hike the trails of the Wissahickon Valley, and provide quiet reflective “solo time.”

  • PEER LEADERSHIP EXPEDITIONS run on a pre-set schedule from April through late November.  Contact us to check for available course dates for 2006 and 2007.

Youth Leadership Corps: 14-day summer expeditions combined with post-course activities, which bring together a diverse group of urban/suburban students (ages 15 to 17) from communities across the Mid-Atlantic region. Participants will join a dynamic and talented group representing their community based on the merits of their application and their leadership potential. To qualify for these competitive awards, students must demonstrate leadership potential in their academic, athletic and social lives. These unique courses challenge young people to strengthen their own leadership skills while encouraging those of their team.

Educator’s Expeditions: Short expedition courses designed for teachers and school administrators from the Mid-Atlantic region. Educators may choose to participate in a 7 day backpacking or canoeing Wilderness Expedition which takes place in Western Maryland or a 5 day Urban Expedition which explores the rich cultural, historical, and natural environment of metropolitan Philadelphia.
