OUTWARD BOUND
was founded in Aberdovy, Wales in
1941 by Kurt Hahn, a noted European educator. Hahn established a
program of progressively rugged tasks to help young sailors
develop the skills and confidence necessary to survive harsh
physical challenges. At the core of this program was the belief
that through success in meeting challenges, young sailors
learned that they possessed “far more than they knew” and began
to develop an ethic of self-reliance. The program was an
immediate success and named “Outward Bound” after the nautical
term that refers to the moment a ship leaves its homeport, bound
for the open ocean.
As one of the pioneers in the world of adventure-based education
and experiential learning, Outward Bound continues to be the
leading innovator in the field today. We continually hear from
the schools we work with, "Outward Bound is brilliantly unlike
school. You learn by doing!"
BALTIMORE CHESAPEAKE BAY OUTWARD BOUND
CENTER
Established in 1986 as the first
urban-based Outward Bound program in the United States,
the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward
Bound Center focuses its programs on
the youth and communities of Baltimore and the state of
Maryland. From its campus in Leakin Park,
the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound
Center seeks to provide students and communities with
safe but challenging educational experiences in natural outdoor
settings, carefully structured to enhance self-esteem,
self-reliance, concern for others, service to the community, and
care for the environment.
PHILADELPHIA OUTWARD BOUND CENTER
Established in 1992, Philadelphia Outward Bound provides
students with safe and challenging educational experiences
utilizing the rich natural and human resources of the city of
Philadelphia and surrounding areas. The
Philadelphia Outward Bound Center
uses outdoor activities and
the wilderness to teach group and leadership skills,
self-discipline, self-reliance, a sense of community and a
commitment to the values of compassion and service.
Both the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay
and Philadelphia Outward Bound Centers
are designed to present positive educational and skill-building
alternatives for young people. For many young people the skills
and values they discover at Outward Bound help them combat the
culture of violence and drugs that America’s youth confront
today. The programs are uniquely designed to encourage young
people to discover their inner strengths and to help them
translate challenging life experiences into positive personal
achievement.
All Outward Bound programs are
driven by the same core values and design
principles:
- Challenge and Adventure
- Character development
- Learning through experience
- Compassion and Service
- Social and environmental responsibility
"The aim of education is to impel people into value forming experiences…to insure the survival of these qualities: an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self denial and above all, compassion."
--Kurt Hahn
